Volunteer Spotlight

We are proud to be a charity that is primarily run by a team of amazing and dedicated volunteers. Over the past few months we have shared some volunteer spotlights to introduce some of our brilliant team. So we are very pleased to shine a light this month on Laura Johnson, our Grants Administrator.
Laura helps to process grant applications, monitor project evaluations, and create content for both our website and social media channels
As a busy mum of three, Laura didn’t have much time to think about her own goals until her youngest started school in 2024. While job hunting, nothing quite clicked, and she realised she wanted something more meaningful. That’s when she found a role with Sea-Changers that truly aligns with her values.
Laura is passionate about ocean conservation and believes it’s often overlooked (“out of sight, out of mind”). While large organisations play a vital role in funding research and sharing knowledge, she values the power of grassroots action, where real, tangible change happens within communities. Supporting these kinds of projects is what makes her volunteering role so rewarding!
Volunteering has also brought some special moments closer to home. After learning so much about marine life through her role, Laura now shares that knowledge with her children. One highlight last summer? Her daughter finding an egg casing on the beach, and her amazement at learning it came from a shark!
Laura’s love of the coast goes back to childhood trips to the Isle of Wight, think freezing winter walks, wild winds, and lots of laughter. Those memories still come rushing back with every crisp sea breeze.
When she’s not volunteering or juggling family life, you’ll find her out walking the dogs or on her allotment, usually growing half a wonky carrot and far too many courgettes!
Thank you, Laura for all that you do! We’re so grateful to have you as part of the Sea-Changers team, using your organisational, problem solving skills, grant management skills alongside a love for the ocean to ensure we run the best grant process we can.
