February: Morecambe Bay Partnership

Beach clean run by the Morecambe Bay Partnership

Morecambe Bay Partnership’s BeachCare programme and LOVEmyBEACH supports community groups undertaking beach cleans around Morecambe Bay and Cumbria. Dedicated volunteers from local communities run regular events with strategic support provided by Morecambe Bay Partnership as well as raising awareness through creating and promoting campaigns targeting marine litter and water quality. Since 2003, volunteers have dedicated more than 12,500 hours cleaning our beaches, removing of 48 tonnes (and counting!) of rubbish from this beautiful part of the north west coast. Beach clean groups associated with the Partnership now exist in many locations including Arnside, Silverdale, Sunderland Point, Walney Island, Morecambe, Middleton and Hest Bank. Additional groups also operate in West Cumbria at Allonby, Crosscanonby, Silloth, Wolsty Banks and Bowness-on-Solway.

In 2018, Sea-Changers funded the replacement of old and damaged equipment as well as enable the creation of a new beach clean group on the Cumbrian coast. In 2019 we are also supporting a new initiative that will kick start a new volunteer wader ringing group for Morecambe Bay, to increase the knowledge and understanding of the birds that take refuge on our shores over the winter months.
