Ullapool Sea Savers

Knowledge Exchange with Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust

ullapool.png
With support from the Scottish Learning Fund, Ullapool Sea Savers embarked on an impactful visit to the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT) in Tobermory.

Learning and Collaboration

The grant covered ferry transport, self-catering accommodation, food, and the creation of a web journal documenting their experience. During their visit, the Sea Savers connected with HWDT experts, learning about marine conservation efforts and gaining valuable insights to apply in their own projects. They also exchanged ideas with a local seaweed harvester (who brought along some delicious chutneys to sample) and took a windswept walk to the lighthouse, expanding their understanding of sustainable coastal practices.

The trip successfully fulfilled the fund's goals by promoting knowledge-sharing and collaboration. The Sea Savers returned to Ullapool with fresh perspectives and strengthened confidence in their ability to make a difference. Seeing their achievements recognised at the Whale Centre reinforced their motivation and belief in the impact of their efforts.

Lasting Impact and Future Plans

Beyond the educational benefits, the experience built a stronger sense of community and bonds within the group, while younger Sea Savers are already asking when their turn will come. It’s safe to say the inspiration has spread!

USS actively shared their journey on social media, using their platform to inspire others and highlight the value of the SLF. Their upcoming web journal will further extend the reach of their insights, encouraging more community-based groups to engage in marine conservation initiatives and their debrief sessions have allowed them to reflect on their experience and develop ideas for the future.

“This is a fantastic fund. Really well targeted, well thought out and well managed. It has delivered a massive amount of ‘bang for bucks’ for our wee group and we really appreciate it. This is something we have been trying to work out how to deliver since before the pandemic – connecting with and learning from other groups has always been central to what we do – so we are really pleased to have finally pulled it off. Cannot thank Sea-Changers enough for making it possible.”
