"No one would believe this is May in Scotland, it could be the Caribbean!"

In May 2024, volunteers conducted a seaweed survey in the Reiff and Summer Isles area, within the Wester Ross Marine Protected Area (Scottish Highlands). The aim was to record macroalgae species, especially fine red and brown seaweeds growing on maerl (a pink, coral-like seaweed) and rocky seabeds, and to trial DNA barcoding techniques.

A grant from Sea-Changers covered boat, fuel, and transport costs, enabling access to remote sites. Across 23 surveys, 329 species were recorded, including at least 14 not previously found in the area by Seasearch (a citizen science diving project) or professional surveys. Traditional dive and microscopy methods allowed successful monitoring of maerl communities, and the team maximised survey opportunities by adding extra shore and dive sites. Expanding coverage contributed to a highly successful field season and strengthened community engagement with local marine biodiversity.

Public engagement was a major success. An illustrated talk developed into a hands-on seaweed pressing evening attended by around 40 local people, and inspiring at least three follow-up events. A 21-part photo story was produced to support this and along with a related survey on Arran outreach on social media throughout the project.
