Team Otter Broadford - School Visits and Community Beach Clean

"As a school, we were most impressed by the impact of this assembly and the strong message really did get through to our pupils. Our families collected an impressive (if depressing) amount of litter from the beaches and this was appreciated by our followers on social media."

Team Otter Broadford is a group for children and young people run by the International Otter Survival Fund. Their fundamental aim is to clean up their environment and reduce our environmental impact on the Isle of Skye, Scotland.

During the 2025 summer term, a Sea Changers grant allowed Team Otter Broadford to make a mammoth four day school roadshow, reaching 13 different schools and 13,500 students around the Islands of Skye and Raasay. At each school, three proud and passionate Team Otter members (aged between 13 and 14) delivered an interactive workshop encouraging environmental responsibility to the schools in both English and Gaelic. Their aim was to spread their concerns and knowledge on ocean plastic, and the importance of beach cleans, in the hope that the schools would in turn organise their own beach clean as part of a larger ‘community beach clean’ initiative.

Team Otter found that even at primary level, children were engaged and passionate about making a difference, no matter how big or small, to protect our oceans and reduce the impact of plastics. The learning in the class has also encouraged schools to partake in direct action to clean up their environment, with so far 500 children taking part in beach cleans, and 30 bags of litter collected. More schools have beach cleans planned in the Autumn term too, so these numbers are only set to increase as a result of the particularly impactful workshops given by Team Otter.
