“An excellent opportunity offered to our learners. Despite living by the sea, each child
deepened and broadened their knowledge and confidence.” Gairloch Primary School teacher

The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT) is dedicated to conserving whales, dolphins, and porpoises in the Hebrides, ensuring these remarkable animals can thrive in harmony with the region’s coastal communities. Central to this mission is their innovative Floating Classroom – a unique educational experience aboard the Trust’s research vessel, Silurian.

Thanks to funding from Sea-Changers, HWDT was able to take the Floating Classroom to schools in Wester Ross and Gairloch in the North-West Highlands of Scotland in September 2023. The grant covered the costs of a skipper and first mate, enabling the team to reach some of the most remote and isolated communities in the region.

By sailing directly to these locations, the project brought hands-on marine education straight to local children. Over the course of the trip, 97 pupils and 15 teachers from four schools participated in onboard learning sessions. The visit also included a community “open boat” event, giving residents the opportunity to explore Silurian and learn more about HWDT’s research and conservation efforts.
During their time aboard, pupils engaged in a range of interactive activities, such as:
● Learning about whale and dolphin biology and behaviour
● Understanding how and why these animals communicate with sound
● Practicing wildlife spotting with binoculars
● Listening to underwater sounds
● Touring the research yacht and meeting the crew.

These immersive experiences aim to do more than just educate. HWDT hopes that by sparking curiosity, they can inspire a lasting connection to the ocean – encouraging the next generation to become passionate advocates for marine conservation.
