"It's very important to show people what is here in our waters because they might not realise what we've got on our doorstep"

In 2024, Blue Marine Foundation launched the Jersey Ocean Observatory, an interactive online portal bringing the island’s marine life into classrooms and homes. High-resolution footage, fact files and downloadable lessons showcase habitats from seagrass meadows and maerl beds to sand eels, dolphins and oystercatchers.

Sea-Changers’ grant funded the creation of a schools package, supporting lessons in fifteen primary schools. Over 620 pupils engaged with the observatory before launch, producing art, writing letters calling for marine protection and contributing to awareness of Jersey’s Marine Spatial Plan.

The project has been a success in both education and advocacy. It has inspired children, strengthened local support for marine conservation and contributed to the protection of 23% of Jersey’s territorial waters. Media coverage and social media outreach have extended its reach even further, while the observatory remains a freely available resource for all.
