"As a headteacher I am always looking for ways to take learning beyond the confines of the classroom, to put learning and skills into context, and where possible, to utilise the wealth of skills in our local community. This project clearly offered all of this and more! The range of activities and experiences enthused staff and pupils alike. It was fantastic that our younger pupils were part of this project, as so often it is the older pupils who get the opportunities."
This project was based at Wembury Marine Centre, with DWT's experienced marine conservation staff working with Wembury Primary School together with the Marine Conservation Society and the National Trust, providing the school with free activity days from mini beast exploration, a beach clean, beach craft, beachcombing, scavenger hunts and a guided snorkel safari.
As well as giving the children the opportunity to learn about and be inspired by the fascinating marine world the team helped teachers understand how they can use the beach for educational activities. The project was topped off with an open evening at the beach with parents to showcase the school's work throughout the year.
