The Black Fish is a grassroots movement working around Europe to address the issue of overfishing, in particular illegal fishing.

The organisation trains ordinary people as civilian fishing inspectors, better known as 'Citizen Inspectors’. These help to monitor for illegal fishing practices in Europe’s fishing ports and markets.

In recent years Citizen Inspectors have already successfully exposed damaging and illegal fishing practices in the Baltic and Mediterranean Sea, with a focus on illegal tuna fishing, use of dynamite in fishing, illegal driftnets, illegal cod fishing and the use of destructive Fish Aggregation Devices.

The Black Fish has just finished training a new group of Citizen Inspectors in the UK and is aiming for port and market inspections to commence in the country in August. The UK is home to a substantial black market trade in shellfish, worth millions annually. The Black Fish will work with other conservation organisations and fisheries enforcement authorities to track illegal shellfish harvesting.

Evidence is collected in a bid to support prosecutions, ensuring increased compliance with regulations as a way of protecting threatened shellfish populations along Britain’s shores
