2016 - GRANT AWARDED - £500

We are launching an inter school marine awareness campaign in the Southwest with a focus on plastics in the ocean. Schools local to beaches in South Devon will take part in a combination of linked activities to contribute to actual research; including beach combining, litter picking, performing timed specific distance litter surveys and, taking and analysing sediment samples to survey for microplastics. Engaging experiments will culminate in a wealth of increased ocean literacy (as promoted by the Marine Biological Association) and enable teaching of several aspects of the curricular and extra-curricular topics such as food webs and recycling.

The methodology and data collection will be performed to a high standard suitable for contribution to peer reviewed literature and will form a pilot study for a larger citizen science project. The  children  will  be  given  the  opportunity  to  add  their  own perspectives  on  the  issues  that  are  local  to  them.  Through  its  activities  this  project  will  raise awareness  amongst  the  future  generation;  and  through  its  outputs  it  will  raise  awareness amongst the current generation. Together we will do our bit to help clean up the beaches and ocean; we will perform real science to professionally evidence our findings and we will contribute quality research to help fuel the wider campaign.
