Marine Protected Area Research

2014 - Grant Awarded £500

The Porcupine Marine Natural History Society is an informal society interested in marine natural history and recording. In summer 2014 we are teaming up with the Manx Wildlife Trust to address the need for information about marine life within Marine Protected Areas around the Isle of Man. There are a number of sites that have been designated for protection around the island, but for most there is a lack of information on the marine life inhabiting the areas which makes it difficult to properly manage them. In August our volunteers will survey shores and underwater sites to gather vital data on the current condition of some of these sites during a five day field meeting on the island. Anyone with an interest in marine life can take part in the field meeting and we hope that locals and visitors will get involved. Our divers and shore surveyors will systematically collect information and photographs of species and habitats found in Marine Protected Areas around the Isle of Man. The data will then be published and shared to benefit conservation efforts.
