2017 - Grant Awarded - £650

The aim of the project is to validate a number of methods used to establish size at maturity of European lobster. This will allow a better understanding to be gained on the size at which European lobster in Orkney waters begin to reproduce. The project will be run in partnership with the local Orkney fishing community with the information gained supporting sustainable management of this historically important fishery.  In addition, this project will investigate the accumulation of marine micro-plastics within this long lived decapod species, providing information on the impact that marine pollution is having on this species, and therefore on the wider marine environment and food web.
