2014 - Grant Awarded - £500

North Sea Explorers aims to increase children's knowledge about the marine environment. The project will initially be delivered to primary school children from deprived areas of the North East and will:

  • Create a greater understanding of the North Sea,
  • Explore human impact on the marine environment and how to protect this valuable habitat,
  • Encourage local schools to build the North Sea into future learning
  • Deliver an exciting education package that provides opportunities to explore and discover through enjoyable and innovative hands on activities

First the pupils will visit a stretch of coastline and discover the wildlife that lives in the rocky shore habitat and how pollution affects the marine environment.

Then pupils will visit their local swimming pool, which will be transformed into a mock North Sea using realistic props. Children will take part in exciting games and snorkel activities discovering marine adaptations, North Sea food chains, the importance of kelp forests, how pollution harms our wildlife and understand the importance of recycling.

Finally, children will take home action packs to encourage them to share what they have learnt with their families and communities.
