2017 - Grant Awarded - £400

Common and grey seals are regularly seen along the Dorset coast, but due to a lack of formal recording, very little is known about these enigmatic mammals.  Dorset Wildlife Trust can now develop its Seal Recording Project to provide an online recording scheme, a photo ID catalogue and to train 30 local seal spotters to find out if ‘Dorset’ seals are residents or just passing and how they relate to other populations in the Western Channel.  All data collected will be shared, and we aim to match even more individual seals with those recorded in Cornwall, Hampshire and France.  Through education and raising awareness of these flagship species we hope that residents and visitors to Dorset will feel empowered to contribute to the project and become inspired to learn more about and engage in other marine conservation issues and activities on a local, national and even international level.
