Seadream Education

Grant awarded - £500

Seadream Education is a non-profit, Community Interest Company (CIC) that delivers science and engineering activities to instil passion, awe, knowledge, understanding and respect for the world around us.

With help from Sea-Changers they have launched an inter-school marine awareness campaign in the Southwest with a focus on plastics in the ocean. As part of the project schools local to beaches in South Devon took part in a combination of linked activities to contribute to actual research; including beach combing, litter picking, performing timed specific distance litter surveys and taking and analysing sediment samples to survey for microplastics.

The methodology and data collection was carried out to a standard suitable for contribution to peer reviewed literature and will form a pilot study for a larger citizen science project.

79 primary school children took part in a combination of linked activities to contribute to a scientific pilot study. These included the option of beach combing and/or analysis of sediment and seaweed samples taken from the strandline of different beaches to survey for microplastics.

Engaging experiments culminatedin a wealth of increased ocean literacy and enabled the teaching of several aspects of curricular and extra-curricular topics such as food webs, pollution and recycling.

Seadream has now carried out lots of outreach at different schools and talked about the session on marine plastics – it has since generated lots of interest and we hope to fund more sessions through Seadream next term.
