St. Mary’s Seal Watch

Grant awarded - £600

St Mary’s Island is a much-loved and well-recognised spot on the North East Coast. It was designated a Local Nature Reserve in 1992.

St. Mary’s Seal Watch wardens engage with the community to raise awareness about grey seal biology, behaviour and the impact of disturbance to them.  To reduce the extremely high levels of disturbance on the nature reserve, the wardens facilitate responsible wildlife watching and guidelines on best practice when visiting this wildlife sensitive site.

The Sea-Changes grant will enable St. Mary’s Seal Watch to reimburse expenses to many volunteers.  It will help recruit new and support existing volunteers who may not be able to donate both their time and cover the cost of expenses incurred which will in turn see the team of volunteers grow and their great work be a legacy for future generations.
