Mill Strand Integrated School

Grant awarded - £300

Mill Strand Integrated School was established in 1987, by the sea in Portrush, Northern Ireland. It was started by a small number of families with a vision of educating all children, from different communities, together at a time of division and conflict in Northern Ireland. The school was named after the nearby beach. The beach symbolised a fresh start as it is renewed and refreshed every day by the sea.

30 years on, Mill Strand is now an ambassador eco-school. They have adopted the beach and regularly litter pick as part of outdoor classroom learning to protect the marine environment. The school would like to encourage local beach users and tourists to care for the beach and seas by sponsoring and installing a 2minutebeachclean station. In the past 3 years, these stations have been installed at over 200 beaches in the UK and Ireland and have been shown to reduce litter by 60%. This will be a community project in conjunction with our local beach cafe, Babushka, who will act as daily guardian of the board.

This project is still running and hasn't been evaluated yet.
