"Thank you Sea-Changers for funding this very productive survey which showed some very interesting sightings. It is a privilege to be involved with the very passionate volunteers of the CSGRT."

Grant awarded - £500

Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust (CSGRT) are passionate about protecting Cornwall’s precious marine life. To this end long term monitoring of all marine mega fauna, human activity levels and lost fishing gear are surveyed along a 100km+ stretch of Cornwall’s Atlantic coast year round.

Surveys provide vital systematic evidence of the status, health and changes of three Marine Protected Areas and connecting coast in between. Sea-Changers funded one of CSGRT’s 12 annual boat surveys along the middle section of the north Cornish coast.

Twelve volunteer experts in seals, cetaceans and birds spent a day surveying a 40km stretch of coast. 53 seals were spotted and 17 species of birds though no nesting birds were observed.  89 items of ghost gear were spotted and reported to the Global Ghost Gear Initiative.

CSGRT have processed around two thousand photos taken on the day and conducted photo identification of individual grey seals and ringed sea birds encountered.

Post survey photos were posted on CSGRT’s Facebook page and a full report was written and sent to participants, to Newquay Marine Group and the Cornwall Wildlife Trust. Boat survey findings are presented by CSGRT at a range of events from public talks and at conferences in Cornwall, the SW and beyond.
