2014 - Grant Awarded - £500

The grant funding will be used to design, print and set up signs at prominent angling locations along the Sussex Coast to inform anglers about minimum legal and recommended fish sizes and legally protected/threatened species. At first we have decided to create ten signs to be placed in ten strategic angling venues. If the signs prove successful we will be looking to produce more signs for some other venues. With help from our ‘Building Bridges’ project team we will aim to produce multi-lingual signs which, with support from partner organisations,  will help to educate anglers who have moved to the UK and for whom English is not their first language.

Outcomes and Targets:

  • Visible multi-lingual signs to encourage conservation and best practice by recreational sea anglers.
  • Fewer reports of anglers taking undersize/protected species.
  • A reduction of pressure on the relevant enforcement agency resources.
  • Proactive measure by individual sea users to reduce fishing mortality on immature fish and threatened species.
  • Better understanding of marine fisheries conservation by the recreational sea angling sector.

Provisional venues are:

  • Bexhill Promenade
  • Brighton Marina
  • Worthing Pier
  • Eastbourne Pier
  • Hastings Stade
  • Hasting Pier
  • Newhaven Breakwater
  • Seaford Tide Mills Beach
  • Selsey beach
  • Shoreham Harbour Arm
